Epsom Downs - British Racecourse

The home of The Derby.

About Epsom Racecourse:

Epsom Downs offers a summer season of great afternoon and evening Flat racing from April to October and is home to Flat racing's 'blue riband' event, the Investec Derby, the most famous of Britain's 5 Classic races as well as the Investec Oaks for the fillies.

In 1779, Lord Derby and Sir Charles Bunbury conceived the idea of a race to establish which horse was the best of its generation. With the Investec Derby itself, the Investec Oaks for fillies and the Investec Coronation Cup for older horses, the two-day June meeting represents the ultimate test for the thoroughbred.

Standing on the Surrey Downs, Epsom is shaped like an elongated horseshoe. The track rises 150 feet in the first half mile then levelling out before a downhill stretch round Tattenham Corner. The straight five-furlong course is one of the fastest in the world.

Course Details:

Left-handed, U-shaped course of 1m4f with steep undulations. 3 1/2f run-in with pronounced camber, initially downhill, rising in final furlong. Races up to 8 1/2f essentially sharp, particularly on 5f track, which
is the fastest in the world.
