Sedgefield - British Racecourse
A good old fashioned Jumps track in County Durham.
About Sedgefield Racecourse:
Racing has been taking place at Sedgefield from around 1732, with the first recorded meetings in 1846. The course itself was part of the Sands Hall Estate, home of the Ord family and known as the Melton of the North. FJ Bayles described Sedgefield as, 'one of the very finest of good, sound thickly herbage turf, never known to become deep or heavy in the worst of weather. The surface of the gallop is smooth and as regular as a garden lawn. The fences are beautifully built of birch and not difficult to negotiate'. By the mid twenties Sedgefield had three meetings, including a lucrative Boxing Day fixture. The current Racecourse Company was founded in 1927, and has seen the fixtures gradually increase to the current twenty days. Sedgefield is a Jumps only track but races over 10 months of the year, making it a perfect day out whatever time of year. Children under the age of 18 are admitted free of charge on most days.
Left-handed, undulating oval, sharp bends. Chase course has easy fences. Formerly long run-in is now only 250y following replacement of water jump for 1992/3 season. A Circuit of 1m 2f.
