York - British Racecourse

Located on the Knavesmire, providing top quality racing.

About York Racecourse:

York traces a fascinating history back to Roman and Viking times. Horses raced at York during the days of the Emperor Severus in Roman times, York Corporation records show that the City first fully supported racing in 1530. In 1607, racing is known to have taken place on the frozen river Ouse, between Micklegate Tower and Skeldergate Postern. Located on the Knavesmire in the heart of York since 1731, York Racecourse stages 17 days of Flat racing throughout the summer from May until October. The spotlight falls on York's flagship Festival, the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival, which attracts international stars. Children under 18 are admitted free of charge (under 16 with accompanying adult only).

Course Details:

The course was initially a “fish hook” shaped course, with the Lonsdale Cup 2m start on the long spur off the back straight, where the 1m 6f start is currently situated. However in 2005 when York hosted Royal Ascot, the end of the home straight had the bend completed to make the course a full round to allow the running of the 2m 4f Gold Cup.

The course runs left-handed and is just over 1m 7f in length. The track is perfectly flat and galloping on the straight course. The round course is also flat and galloping, however the bend at the top end of the course, as the horses enter the home straight, tightens considerably as the field come around it and this can cause horses to become short of room. However the long wide home straight of over 4 furlongs means there are very few hard luck stories here and the best horse usually wins the race.
