Doncaster - British Racecourse
The home of the St Leger.
About Doncaster Racecourse:
In 1600 the corporation tried to put an end to the races because of the number of ruffians they attracted, but by 1614 it acknowledged failure and instead marked out a racecourse. The earliest important race was the Doncaster Gold Cup, first run over Cantley Common in 1766, ten years before a move to the racecourse's present location. During the First World War the racecourse was used for military purposes and substitute races were run at Newmarket from 1915 to 1918. Every September, Doncaster hosts the prestigious four-day St. Leger Festival, it officially opens the British Flat Racing Season with the Lincoln Meeting held each March and ends the season with the November Handicap. Families are always welcome with accompanied children under 18 entering for free with free entertainment on race days.
Flat- Left-handed, pear-shaped, galloping. Almost 2m round with 4 1/2f run-in. Round and straight miles. Mainly flat, providing fair test.
